Shortly after 9/11 I made a series of Hinged Paintings.
Perhaps as a response to that moment I was searching for some stable place in the continuum of Art History, and (less directly) I was also searching for something that could quietly speak to a duality between perceived exterior and the hidden interior. I soon began to investigate the idea of remaking a medieval alter piece. Both, as an homage to powerful older works that are still able, after many centuries, to suggest ways in which public intention and private meanings are always intertwined, and to slowly engage a concept of the sacred as it was once applied to Art.
